British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
