The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
