Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
