Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
